Our Administration
Administrative Manager
Sharon McManus Comkowycz, M.S. CCC-SLP
Sharon is a veteran speech language pathologist with 25 years of varied
clinical experience. She began her career in 1977 as an itinerant therapist and
diagnostician working in the Polk County School System.
From 1980 - 1990 she was the Supervisor of Speech and Language Pathology for
the Polk County School System while under her direction innovative programs such
as the Language Intervention Program for Secondary Students (LIPSS) were
developed. Specialized programs were showcased at local, state and national
conventions.
From 1990 - 1998, Sharon utilized her administration and management skills in
a medical setting where she became the Divisional Director of Rehab Services at
Winter Haven Hospital-MidFlorida Medical Services. During her tenure at this 500
bed acute care facility she lead the team of physical, occupational and speech
language pathologists, case management nurses and physicians who worked to
expand a small acute care therapy team into a comprehensive rehabilitation
continuum which included: 24 bed comprehensive rehab unit specializing in brain
injury; 30 bed subacute rehab team; an out patient brain injury program modeled
after the school system's severe speech and language classes and called it
ESTEEM, Experience Success After Trauma - Evaluation, Education and Management;
and separated the inpatient/outpatient physical therapy program to provide a
curbside friendly outpatient musculoskeletal program staffed by a team of
physical and occupational therapists. Each new program became CARF (Commission
for Accreditation of Rehab Facilities). Sharon went on to become a CARF and ASHA
surveyor and continues to survey in and out patient rehab programs across the
United States.
Sharon has consulted with highly recognized flagship hospital such as Tampa
General and North Broward Medical Center to help them prepare for CARF
accreditation.
In 1998, Sharon decided to focus her efforts on a needed community project,
pediatric rehabilitation. Full time effort was put into making this pediatric
practice efficient, effective and responsive to the needs of the community. Her
goal is to expand the needed rehab services to children in central and east Polk
County while working with the community to secure funds through grants,
donations and endowment funds to provide Our Children's Rehab with the necessary
resources needed to provide high quality programs. As a CARF surveyor, quality,
efficiency, effectiveness, and customer satisfaction are a priority. Therefore,
her goals include accreditation by CARF and ASHA in the near future.
